The train is taking a turn at the bend before Howard Street, because it is now in Evanston. Passengers on standing on both platforms waiting for the train. This city scene is a free-hand drawing because no rulers were used to make lines. Free-hand rendering always make the architecture of a skyline look warmer because they are done by hand. The cityscape behind the train is of an old factory followed by a more modern apartment building. This city scene is a combination of old and new architecture which give addition interest to the rendering. On the roof of the building behind the train stands large air-conditioning units that make strong blacks spots in the drawing because they are big. The Howard Street line is very popular because of Northwestern University. Chicago “L” Train 264A The city scene drawing is done with pen & ink on Strathmore paper and medium nib. Hatched lines are used extensively throughout the city scene because they make shade and shadows. There are hatched lines used to make the intricate shading underneath the railroad ties because these are very small. Cross-hatching was not done in this city scene because it was a very sunny day. The best time for cross-hatching lines is in the evening where there is a lot of shade and shadows. Architectural rendering lend themselves to pen & ink because it is so clear and accurate. Pen & ink drawing work in a high contrast form that uses hatched lines for shad and shadows because it does not have a graduated nature. All of the lines in pen & ink have to be short and clean because they have to make the hatch lines for shading.
